Western Hemisphere Shorebird Group Meeting
The Western Hemisphere Shorebird Group Meeting is a biennial meeting of biologists, scientists, ornithologists, conservationists, and shorebird enthusiasts.
The purpose of the meeting is to promote conservation of shorebirds in the Western Hemisphere by:
- Bringing together biologists studying breeding, staging and wintering shorebirds throughout the Western Hemisphere.
- Promoting information sharing on methods of study and conservation among biologists working on different shorebird species throughout the hemisphere.
- Promoting range-wide studies and conservation of shorebirds by fostering collaborations among biologists and conservationists.
- Integrating science into the implementation of various shorebird conservation plans.
- Generating enthusiasm among the shorebird community to conduct additional studies of and conservation efforts for shorebirds in the future.
The Western Hemisphere Shorebird Group meeting is the only meeting specifically designed to foster interchange and collaboration among shorebird scientists and conservationists in North, Central, and South America — regions that share the same migrating shorebirds across wintering, migrating, and breeding seasons.
To optimize the impact of conservation efforts, it is essential that conservation and management be conducted throughout a species annual cycle and range. Thus our meetings include biologists from virtually every country within the Western Hemisphere and, as such, many partnerships are initiated and fostered during this international opportunity for collaboration.
Conference Planning Guide
WHSG conferences are hosted by a Local Committee, which is responsible for the planning and implementation of the conference. The WHSG Executive Committee and other parties involved in past conferences provide additional guidance and support. Hosting a WHSG conference is a challenging and rewarding experience that the WHSG entrusts to a Local Committee every two years. This guide provides information to prospective and current Local Committees to understand the full process of hosting a WHSG conference.
